Diary of a Reiki Student: Entry II ~ First Reiki Class

Dear Diary,

Today Saturday January 20th, 2018, I completed my Level 1 of Usui Shiki Ryoho which means “The Usui System of Natural Healing” founded by Sensei Mikao Usui (who made Reiki available in Kyoto, Japan in the early 20th century.) My teacher is, Denise Carpenter RT-CRA 99-100 Reiki Master/Teacher from Reiki Associates [30 North Street, Perth Ontario Canada.] www.reikiassociates.com

My supportive husband drove me to my half-day course. From 10am to 6pm. Yes, I will be honest I was nervous. Even if I have read books on Reiki I did not know what to expect. The center in which I was in was named The Lotus Wings, a charming building in downtown Perth, ON. When I walked in, I felt the stillness and peacefulness of the atmosphere, instantly my nerves settled. I was greeted by a gracious woman named Denise (a Reiki Master/Teacher).

I was expecting other students to arrive but to my surprise my teacher announced that the other students had backed-out and I would be the only student. My first thoughts were: This takes off the pressure of talking in public with strangers. However, it would have been a good experience to practice with other students.

We exchanged introductions and pleasantries, I was on pins and needles to get started. Denise spoke of highlights of the day, the learning materials, a  lunch break at 12 noon and the reiki attunment at the end of the training; followed by a reiki practice we would do on each other, since there were no other students. It was all very intriguing.

My manual consisted of a printed binder with student notes, as a Reiki Master Teacher Denise created this curriculum. One of the things I admire about her is her attention to detail and professionalism. I always felt like I was receiving quality work, which is something I value in any practice.

To begin we learned about What is Reiki? The Benefits of Reiki and The History of Usui Reiki

“Rei means universal, holy, spirit, mystery, gift, nature spirit or invisible spirit and Ki can be translated into English as energy, nature scene, talent and feeling.” ~ Reference: Reiki Associates – Reiki Level 1 by Denise Carpenter.

This is when I began to open up about why I was interested in reiki and my past experiences with energy work. I recalled the moment when I knew I had to learn this healing method. When my male cat Teddy (of only 4 years old) became ill with a heart condition, I did reiki on him to ease his pain. I knew that it worked instantly and felt such a loving force of energy. If only I had taken reiki to make it even more effective, where my thoughts.

This picture was taken a few moments after I did a 1 hour reiki treatment on my cat Teddy. He suffered from water in the lungs with a heart condition. During this time he was on medication, and had a hard time eating. After doing reiki on him I did notice him acting more peaceful, like able to sleep with more comfort. I may not have had reiki training at the time but I did read books and practiced. There is a mysterious energy that comes when doing reiki, it always seems to know how to heal the patient and always leaves them feeling blissful. Teddy passed away two months after this photo was taken on October 31, 2017. Although, I still mourn the loss of his life, I know he is in the Animal Kingdom in the afterlife. As for his last days on earth, I was comforted to know that reiki did ease his pain during the final moments of his life.

Before finding reiki I was desperate to find meaning in my life, my career was okay after a long search to find a steady full-time-job, it just didn’t feel like my soul’s purpose.  I would have to accept my DAY JOB to pay the bills and make a living, while at the same time fulfill my SOUL’S PURPOSE in the evenings and on weekends. Reiki was always a subject (since a very young age) that always allured me to learn, now was the time to fulfill that! I was very grateful to find Denis because she had the set up and subject that I longed to learn and be present in.

Sitting in The Lotus Wings building was a delight. Part of the reiki learning experiences (in any esoteric practice) usually pairs with Angel or Tarot readings, picking a crystal and setting out an intention (for manifestation). For me, Denis ask that I pick from a bag of gems/stones/crystals to see what my Higher Self/ Spirit wanted me to focus on during the reiki training. I choose Citrine.

I know that this stone is mostly associated with assistance in finances in business, I feel it came to me because the next chapter of my life is to sort out my career and fuse my passion with work.

The next phase was learning Usui Reiki Techniques.

This was the most interesting for me. Out of respect for the Reiki Master Teacher and the practice of Usui Reiki I will not be writing about the Reiki Symbols or everything that is taught, if one is interested one should learn and witness for one’s self. Out of all the types of Reiki that is offered out there I was so pleased to be able to learn Usui Reiki. Usui Reiki symbols are sacred and are to be kept confidential.

Usui Shiki Ryoho. Reiki is a Japanese word translated as “Universal Life Energy” by Hawayo Takata. She brought the possibility of a relationship with this energy to us through Usui Shiki Ryoho, a healing system founded by Mikao Usui in the early part of the 1900’s.

To conclude my Reiki Level 1 training experience. I felt so honored to be learning the history and healing energy techniques from this discipline. For the first time in my life, I finally feel there is meaning in my life. The most powerful experience during this Reiki training was the Attunement. The main purpose of an attunement or reiju (pronounced Ray-joo) is to raise the student’s energy level to re-connect to the true inner self (soul), plus strengthen the connection to universal spiritual energy. When my Reiki Master Teacher Denis did this for me, I was elevated to a higher vibration frequency which will forever change me and my life.

At the very end, we discussed how I could become a member at The Canadian Reiki Assocation (CRA) and how to start a self-practice. Code of ethics and legal issues were reviewed and Denis shared with me how she started her own self Reiki practice from her living room at home. Looking at her success now fills my heart with hope and ambition. These steps toward learning Reiki have brought me closer to my soul and the reason why I am here on this earth. Before I can heal others fully I will start by healing myself first. Part of Reiki training is to give yourself self-treatments and use Reiki as a life practice to achieve health, vitality, positive energy. It can heal both the mental and physicals aspects of human condition. Reiki has an effect on the environment, animals and plant life. It is the life force energy of the earth and the Universe. It has no limits and is only there to heal and be of service. This was a precious life gift to receive and I am humbly honored to have learned the first level of Reiki.

“The ability to do perform Reiki comes from an internal freedom. The power to be free from stress, tension, and anger.”
